Bulking Factor - What is bulking of soil?

The bulking factor for materials always comes into play when excavation of material occurs on the construction site. Moisture in the material which is excavated increases the volume in sand, soil or clay which is called the bulking factor.

Bulking Factor - Sand, Soil, Clay and other Materials.

  • Basalt – 2.4 Kilograms to 3.1 Kilograms per Cubic Metre (Bulking Factor – 75% to 80% depending on moisture content).
  • Clay – 1.8 Kilograms to 2.6 Kilograms per Cubic Metre (Bulking Factor – 20% to 40% depending on moisture content).
  • Dolomite – 2.8 Kilograms per Cubic Metre (Bulking Factor – 50% to 60% depending on moisture content).
  • Sand – Dry 1.6 Kilograms per Cubic Metre (Bulking Factor – 75% to 80% depending on moisture content).
  • Sandstone – 2.1 Kilograms per Cubic Metre to 2.4 Kilograms per Cubic Metre (Bulking Factor – 75% to 80% depending on moisture content).
