Steel Framing 3.4.2

Where the building has been designed alternatively as construction of a steel framing system the performance requirement must comply with building codes.

Design requirements for other materials used in combination with steel framing, including the use of concrete floors, heavy steel support beams and other components need to be designed structural using building codes 3.11 and 3.4.4 to comply.

Steel Framing 3.4.2.2

The steel frame must be protected from corrosion in accordance with the following:

  • Where the steel frame is within the building envelope in locations more than 300 m from the breaking surf or salt water.
  • Where the steel frame is within the building envelope in locations not in a heavy industrial area: or
  • Where the steel frame is outside the building envelope in locations more than 1 km from salt water which is not subject to breaking surf, such as a lake or protected bay.
  • Where the steel frame is outside the building envelope in locations more than 10 km from a coastal area with breaking surf or not in a heavy industrial area.

The steel frame must have a minimum coating class in accordance with AS 1397 of Z275 (275 grams of zinc per square metre) or AZ150 (150 grams of aluminium/zinc per square metre).
